Betty Jean was born 8 miles south of Miami, TX on September 18, 1929, to Carrie Lee (Gatlin) Clement and Everett Dave Clement.  She was raised on the Clement farm east of Spearman.  Along with her siblings Rosa Lee, Deacon, and Shorty, she attended the two-room country “Black School” near their home.  She later attended Spearman High School, graduating in 1946.  The summer after graduation Betty was a “soda jerk” at Hale’s Drug Store where she met Irvin Davis after he returned from his service in WWII.  They were married November 24, 1946, at her parents’ home east of Spearman.  Thus began her calling as a homemaker, and she excelled at it.  Betty and Irvin welcomed a daughter, Phyllis, in December of 1947, son Mike in August of 1951, and son Jerry Pat in January of 1955.  Betty Jean was a wonderful wife and mother.  She was a Proverbs 31 woman: “she was truly more precious than rubies”... She was an excellent cook and took her job as homemaker very seriously and with great joy.  She would grow a garden and can vegetables and preserves. Whenever needed she would take a hot meal out to the field to Irvin. She and Irvin were married almost 76 years before his passing in 2022.  One of Betty’s greatest joys was being a grandmother, or Nanny, as she was called.  She was the best grandmother anyone could ask for.  She especially loved babies and small children, but she would light up anytime one of her family would visit her no matter their age.  She loved reading to, playing games with, and cooking for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a master at family gatherings and knew what everyone’s favorite meal and dessert was and would cook that especially for them.  Betty was dearly loved by her family and friends and will be missed greatly.

Her Christian faith was very important to her and it was her guiding light.  She truly had a servant’s heart.  When she wasn’t serving her family, she was helping one of the many ladies who lived in the manor that didn’t have any family of their own.  She was very active in the First Christian Church, the Hansford Hospital Auxiliary, Gladiola Flower Club, and Hansford Hospice.  In 1986 she was named the Citizen of the Year by the Spearman Chamber of Commerce and in 2008 she was named Citizen Over the Years.  She and Irvin were also the King and Queen of the Spearman Parade.

Betty Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, her husband Irvin, her son Mike, her son in law David Collins, and grandson in law Scott Swan. She is survived by her daughter Phyllis of Spearman and son Jerry Pat of Amarillo.  Grandchildren Lisa Flowers and Brent Collins. Ryan Davis (Kate), Nick Davis (Katie), Grace Pshigoda (Ashley), Charles Davis, Mattie Been (Cody Mac), Step-grandchildren Ryan Hodges (Katie), Spencer Hodges, and Lexi Hodges.  Great Grandchildren Hunter Flowers, Emma Kelsy, Maggie Davis, Jack Davis, Cy Davis, Elodie Davis, Hyland Davis, Jordyn Pshigoda, Betty Calvert, Henry Pshigoda, Theo Pshigoda, Perrilyn Davis, Everett Been, Walter Been and Helen Been.  Great-great-grand children Oliver and Nolan Flowers and many nephews and nieces whom she loved.  The family would also like to thank the staff at Hansford Manor and Hansford Hospice for loving her and the excellent care they provided, especially her loving friend and caregiver, Sharlyne Robles.  Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Spearman, P.O. Box 637 Spearman, Tx 79081 or the charity of your choice.
