Friday Night Lights Return to Hansford County: Spearman vs. Gruver in Rivalry Renewed

by Editor

HANSFORD COUNTY -- The stands will be full and the energy electric this Friday night as the Spearman Lynx and Gruver Greyhounds meet in one of Hansford County's most anticipated sporting traditions. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on August 29 at Spearman High School, where fans from across the county are expected to gather for the annual showdown.

This year marks the second straight season that Texas Farm Bureau has stepped up as the underwriting sponsor, covering the gate to ensure free admission for everyone. The first 500 fans through the gate will also receive free spirit items, and at halftime a special field-goal competition will give each school the chance to win $500 for their program.

The rivalry runs deep between Spearman and Gruver. Last season, Gruver rolled to a 49 - 15 victory behind the breakout play of then-junior quarterback Briggs Satterfield, who threw for more than 200 yards and rushed for another 160 in a five-touchdown performance. Walker Maupin added a kickoff return touchdown, while Stephen Cowan contributed in the passing game, helping the Greyhounds to a dominant win.
That result followed another memorable chapter in 2022, when Gruver edged Spearman 24 - 20 in a nail-biter that wasn't decided until the final seconds. Rivalry games between the two schools have long been known for packed stands, tense finishes, and plenty of county bragging rights on the line.

For the Lynx, Friday's game offers the chance to flip the script and reclaim momentum. For the Greyhounds, it's an opportunity to prove that last year's lopsided win was no fluke. Either way, the community will come together in one of the most unifying events on the local calendar.
"Friday Night Lights" is more than a slogan in Hansford County -- it's a gathering of families, neighbors, alumni, and friends from across generations. Whether you wear purple or red, this is a night to rally around the kids who proudly represent their schools.
So grab your seat, wave your spirit towel, and join in the fun as Spearman and Gruver renew a rivalry that has defined high school football in this corner of Texas for decades.
