A Fresh Chapter for a Fifty-Year Legacy: Stationmaster's House Museum to reopen this Veterans Day weekend

by By Dr. Holly Whitaker

SPEARMAN, TEXAS -- Fifty years after its founding, the Stationmaster's House Museum is preparing to open its doors once again, this time with renewed exhibits, restored spaces, and the same steadfast commitment to conserving the history of Hansford County.
Closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the museum's pause became a turning point. Volunteers and board members took the opportunity to look closely at every room, every artifact, and every story. What began as a clean-up quickly grew into a full revitalization effort, with more than 5,000 hours of volunteer time invested since late 2023.
"When you work alongside people who care this deeply about our history, you realize you're not just fixing a display case or painting a wall," said Board President Mike Ralston. "You're ensuring that these stories will still be here for our children and grandchildren."
When visitors return this November, they will find both familiar treasures and new experiences. The agricultural aviation exhibit anchored by Rue Sanders' hand-built "Flutterbug" experimental aircraft tells the story of local pilots and the role of flight in farming and ranching. A new Veterans and Public Service gallery honors Hansford County residents who have served in the military and in other roles of civic leadership. The immersive "Old Hansford" exhibit invites guests to step into the storefronts, offices, and gathering spaces that shaped the town's early days.
The re-opening is set for Veterans Day weekend, a fitting moment to honor the service and perseverance of our local communities. The board sees it both a celebration of the past and as the start of a new era for a space that is both a heritage center and an economic driver for the community.
"Every artifact has a story," Ralston said. "This museum ensures they are not forgotten."
