From Spearman to Starkville: Brenen Thompson Shines at SEC Media Days

by Staff Report

By Reporter-Statesman Staff

Former Spearman Lynx standout Brenen Thompson took center stage last week at SEC Media Days in Dallas, representing Mississippi State University with the same mix of humility, grit, and heart that made him a hometown favorite.

Now a rising star wide receiver for the Bulldogs, Thompson was chosen to speak on behalf of the team -- a notable honor considering he has yet to play a down in Starkville. But for those who know him, it came as no surprise.

"This place reminds me a lot of home," Thompson said during the interview, reflecting on the similarities between Mississippi's college town and the rural roots of Spearman, Texas. "Country town, close-knit community, everybody loves football."
His family, including his mother Bonnie, still lives in Spearman. And they'll be in the stands for Thompson's home opener with Mississippi State, continuing to support the athlete who's proudly carrying the Spearman name into one of the most competitive conferences in college football.
More Than Speed
Thompson's track record is impressive -- literally. A state champion sprinter with a 100-meter time of 10.38 seconds, his explosive speed is now central to Mississippi State's new offense under Coach Jeff Lebby.

"We're going to play fast. We're going to be explosive. We're going to put up a lot of points," Thompson promised.
But it's not just his athleticism that's drawing attention. Thompson's focus on character, leadership, and team culture resonated throughout the week.
"I don't think you can lead everybody the same way," he told reporters. "Leadership has to be personal. Everybody requires something different."
Coach Lebby echoed that sentiment, calling Thompson "a difference-maker" who's "about the right stuff," not just on the field, but in the locker room too.
Lessons, Loyalty, and Looking Ahead
Thompson's path to Mississippi State hasn't been a straight line. After stints at Texas and Oklahoma, he says the journey -- with all its challenges -- has made him stronger.
"Trials and learning from my mistakes made me the man I am today," he said. His comments weren't about blame -- they were about growth.
He was also candid about the changing nature of college football, including the role of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) money.

"Money isn't everything," he said. "You're there to play football."

That grounded perspective is one he credits to his mom.

"She's probably listening right now," he added with a smile. "She's amazing."
Spearman Still in His Heart
Despite transferring schools and competing on one of college football's biggest stages, Thompson hasn't forgotten where he came from. His rural upbringing, faith, and family keep him grounded -- and focused.

Mississippi State fans are hopeful that his speed and spirit will help lead the Bulldogs to a breakout season.

Back home in Spearman, a town that continues to take pride in its own, Brenen Thompson remains a symbol of what's possible when talent meets values -- and a reminder that no matter how far you run, home is never far behind.
